Learning Outcome 3
Develop professional relationships with students, teachers, other teacher candidates, school staff, parents and others.
Throughout my practicum, I intentionally developed professional relationships with students, educators, and members of the broader school community, recognizing that strong relationships are foundational to effective teaching and learning. I came to understand that building trust, maintaining open communication, and demonstrating consistency in my interactions were essential in creating a positive and supportive learning environment.
My relationships with students were a central focus of my practice. From the beginning of my placement, I made an effort to learn students’ names, interests, and personalities, and to create a welcoming classroom presence. When I first introduced myself to the class, I encouraged students to ask questions, which helped establish openness and approachability. As I became more involved in teaching, I intentionally incorporated student interests into lessons to increase engagement. For example, during coding lessons, I used gaming examples in their practice worksheets to appeal to their engagement as well as I invited students to contribute ideas to a shared class animation, allowing them to feel a sense of ownership in their learning. Similarly, in dance, students were given opportunities to create their own choreography using guided prompts, which fostered creativity and encouraged self-expression.
I also built relationships with students outside of formal instruction. My involvement in the junior boys’ basketball practices and tryouts allowed me to connect with students in a different context, where I could support teamwork, skill development, and sportsmanship. Running my own group during tryouts helped me establish credibility and build trust with students, as they saw me take on a leadership role. Additionally, attending school basketball games and participating in school spirit activities allowed me to engage with students in a more informal and community-based setting, further strengthening these connections. Watching the progression of the basketball season from the tryouts to the team winning the areas tournament was a surreal experience. It opened my eyes to the power in involving oneself in the extracurriculars of the school community and how important it is to foster a sense of belonging for students in the school.
My professional relationship with my mentor teacher played a significant role in my growth as an educator. I engaged in ongoing dialogue with my mentor teacher, discussing lesson planning, assessment strategies, and classroom management. For example, during a co-taught data management lesson, I worked collaboratively to facilitate group discussions and guide student learning during a gallery walk activity. Following this lesson, we reflected together on what was effective and identified areas for improvement, which helped me refine my teaching practice. I also appreciated opportunities to support my mentor teacher with tasks such as marking, organizing materials, and preparing lessons, which strengthened our working relationship and demonstrated my commitment to being a collaborative team member.
In addition to my mentor teacher, I built relationships with other staff members, particularly in the learning commons. By assisting with book sign outs and organization, supporting students in selecting reading materials, and facilitating literacy and STEM activities for younger students, I collaborated with staff in a shared space that served the entire school. These experiences reinforced the importance of teamwork and communication among educators in supporting student success across grade levels.
One of the most impactful ways I learned about the importance of building relationships within the school community was through the school's organized wellness night. A committee on the faculty organized an event with vendors from wellness-based programs from around the community who would come in and teach students and families about wellness-based practices. My contribution was assisting with the organization and selection of prizes for the student raffle, as well as running the orientation desk in the front hallway during the event. My role at the orientation desk allowed me to connect with various families of students I taught throughout the school. It was a fantastic experience getting to speak with and get to know the families of students I saw everyday during my block.
Through this learning outcome, I have developed a deeper understanding of the role relationships play in education. I have learned that strong professional relationships are built through consistency, respect, and genuine care for others. These connections not only support student engagement and well-being but also contribute to a positive and collaborative school culture.
Moving forward, I will continue to prioritize relationship-building in my teaching practice by creating inclusive and supportive classroom environments, maintaining open communication with colleagues and families, and actively participating in the school community. I recognize that as I grow in my career, these relationships will remain a cornerstone of my effectiveness as an educator.
