Learning Outcome 1

Actively engage in the work of the school and classroom to understand the role of all stakeholders in creating and sustaining an engaging, inclusive, safe and equitable environment.

Throughout my practicum, I actively engaged in both classroom and school-wide initiatives to deepen my understanding of the roles that students, educators, families, and the broader community play in fostering an engaging, inclusive, safe, and equitable learning environment. My weekly experiences have demonstrated a commitment to collaboration, communication, and active participation throughout the life of the school.

Within the classroom, I prioritized student voice and engagement by designing and facilitating hands-on, inquiry-based lessons across a variety of subject areas, including Dance, Health and Physical Education, Mathematics (Coding), and Science (Matter and Energy and Structures and Mechanisms). I created opportunities for students to collaborate, problem-solve, and express their ideas, such as through coding projects, dance choreography tasks, and STEM-based Makerspace activities. By incorporating movement, creativity, and student choice, I have supported an inclusive learning environment that addressed diverse learning styles and needs.

Beyond classroom instruction, I actively contributed to the broader school community. I supported extracurricular activities such as senior boys’ volleyball and attended junior boys basketball games, demonstrating my commitment to building relationships with students outside of instructional time. I also participated in school-wide events such as the book fair, where I assisted during and after school hours, gaining insight into how schools engage families and promote literacy within the community. Additionally, I contributed to preparations for the school’s community wellness night by collaborating with staff to organize and assemble resources, further supporting the school's student and family engagement.

My involvement in the learning commons has provided me with valuable opportunities to collaborate with both staff and students across a variety of grade levels. I have facilitated literacy and STEM-based lessons for primary students, connecting literature to coding through hands-on activities using Bee Bots and robotics. I also took on responsibilities such as organizing materials, managing book circulation, and supporting students in selecting appropriate resources. These experiences have highlighted the importance of shared spaces in fostering inclusive, school-wide learning communities and supporting diverse learners.

I made a conscious effort to engage with school staff and initiatives to better understand school priorities and collaborative practices. I participated in Makerspace planning meetings, where educators discussed ways to integrate inquiry-based learning across the school. This experience strengthened my understanding of how educators work together to build capacity and create cohesive, engaging programming. I also worked closely with my mentor teacher in planning, assessment, and daily classroom operations, including adapting lessons, analyzing student work, and supporting report card preparation.

These experiences have strengthened my understanding that education is a collaborative effort requiring ongoing communication and shared responsibility among all stakeholders. I recognize the importance of engaging with families, staff, and the broader community to support student well-being and success. Moving forward, I aim to continue developing my ability to contribute to school-wide initiatives, strengthen home-school communication, and support inclusive practices that reflect the diverse needs of the school community.

Overall, my practicum has reinforced my belief that actively engaging in the life of the school is essential to creating meaningful, equitable, and supportive learning environments for all students.
