Learning Outcome 2
Demonstrate a professional manner in keeping with the Ontario College of Teachers Standards of Practice and Ethical Standards of Practice (OCT Professional Standards).
Throughout my practicum experience, I consistently demonstrated a professional manner aligned with the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) Standards of Practice and Ethical Standards, particularly in the areas of care, trust, respect, and integrity. I recognized early on that professionalism extends beyond appearance and punctuality, and instead encompasses how I interact with my students, collaborate with colleagues, and uphold ethical responsibilities in all aspects of school life.
One of the most consistent ways I demonstrated professionalism during my placement was through reliability and preparation. I made it a priority to arrive early each and everyday, allowing time to organize materials, print and copy lesson resources, preparing for instruction. This routine not only helped the classroom run smoothly, but also demonstrated my commitment to contributing meaningfully to the teaching and learning environment. I also took initiative in completing tasks such as marking math diagnostic assessments, assisting with report card preparation, and processing and organizing new library books, all of which required attention to detail and a strong sense of responsibility.
I upheld ethical standards by maintaining confidentiality and demonstrating professional judgment in my interactions. For example, when supporting assessment tasks, I ensured that student information and performance were discussed only with my mentor teacher and not shared inappropriately.
When working with students who required additional support, I approached each situation with sensitivity and a non-judgmental mindset, providing encouragement and constructive feedback while maintaining student dignity. This was particularly evident during small group instruction and one-on-one support in mathematics, where I adapted my explanations to meet student needs without drawing unnecessary attention to their challenges.
Respectful and professional communication was central to my interactions with both students and staff. I consistently used positive language, active listening, and clear instructions when teaching and supporting students. I also engaged in ongoing professional dialogue with my mentor teacher, asking questions, seeking feedback, and reflecting on ways to improve my practice. For instance, after co-teaching a data management lesson, I reflected on how I facilitated discussion and adjusted my approach in future lessons to better guide student thinking. These conversations contributed to my growth and demonstrated my willingness to learn and improve.
My professionalism also extended beyond the classroom through active participation in school initiatives and extracurricular activities. I assisted with boys’ volleyball practices and tryouts, at one point independently running a group of Grade 4 and 5 students. This experience required leadership, organization, and the ability to manage students in a different context while maintaining a positive and respectful environment.
This learning outcome has had a significant impact on my development as an educator. I have come to understand that professionalism is not a single action, but a consistent approach to teaching that reflects ethical practice, responsibility, and respect for all members of the school community. Moving forward, I will continue to uphold the OCT Standards by engaging in ongoing professional learning, maintaining reflective practices, and contributing positively to school environments. I will also continue to build my capacity to communicate effectively with students, staff, and families, ensuring that my practice remains inclusive, ethical, and student-centered.
Overall, my practicum experience has strengthened my understanding of what it means to be a professional educator. I am confident that the habits, skills, and values I have developed will guide me as I continue to grow in my teaching career.
